4.24 The Princess and The Rogue (Part II.)
Tony
We didn't get too far. As soon as we exited the quarantine we were met with the "samples lady".
"Where do you think you are taking him, Heffner?" she barked at Princess. She clearly didn't like the prospect of her source of samples getting away.
"Dr. Bachman, I... uhm... Professor asked me to..." Princess didn't seem to be very good at improvised stories.
"...take more samples from me," I offered readily.
The lady's face turned a shade darker. "Why don't you do it in the quarantine? Have you lost your mind, Heffner? He might still be infectious and you're parading him as if you're on a date! This is unacceptable! Where's the professor?"

She peeked in the quarantine over Kellie's shoulder and must have spotted the old man on the floor. Dammit! I knew we should have stuck him in the sterilizer.
"Security!" she shrieked. In the next moment she flopped down on the floor.
Kellie looked at me in puzzlement. "How...?"
I showed her a syringe in my hand. "I took the liberty of reaching into your pocket and borrowing it. Thought I would spare you the stress."
She blinked and swallowed visibly. "Thank you."
Oh yes, I know how hard it was for you the first time, Princess. There won't be a second time, if I have any say in this. I'm doing the dirty work from now on.
However, the shriek didn't go unnoticed. The door opened and two soldiers rushed in. They took in the neutralized doctor on the floor and pulled out their guns.
"Freeze!"
And Princess did.
"Well, it was fun while it lasted," I said and put my hands up. I'd be crazy if I tried to fight bullets with needles. The soldiers were slowly coming closer.
"Grab the last syringe, Tony, and take me as a hostage!" Kellie whispered.
It took me two long seconds to process what she just suggested. I was deeply touched by her willingness to take even greater risk for a scoundrel like me. I knew I'd probably be able to pull it off, even though I had never taken a hostage before. But there was only one way to respond to her offer.
"Hell no."
"Do it, Tony. Please. We only need to get though that door and we are safe."
"Which door?"
"Over there."
I followed her look and then all of a sudden she pushed me in that direction. I stumbled and she jumped after me. Shots rang against the glass behind us.
Cazzo! I cussed inwardly. All it would take was a ricochet and we were done.
We stumbled to the door and she swiped her ID card over the scanner. She was pressing me against the door, her body shielding mine. My blood ran cold when I realized what she was doing. "Dammit, Princess, stop playing a human shield! I can take care of myself!"
"I'm a staff member. They are less likely to shoot at me," she breathed into my shoulder. "I hope."
"Bloody hell, they have already tried!"
The door opened with a beep and we practically fell into the room. I kicked the door closed behind us and in that moment one of the soldiers threw himself against it with a loud thud. It was only the door and the glass window separating us from them.
"I hope the glass is bulletproof," I said, picking myself from the floor. The other soldier was already testing it and tried to shoot through it. With no success. Thank the Watcher for small miracles. "I don't think the door will hold them back too long."
"Couple of minutes is all we need," Princess said in a trembling voice and tinkered about something what looked like a control desk of sorts. To my surprise she was smiling.
There was another door leading out of this room. "We should move on, Princess." I motioned to the exit. The soldier trying to break the glass noticed. He turned around and shouted something at his buddy who kept hitting the door. They both started running to the lab's exit to try to cut us off. Dammit!
"Princess, now would be a good time to move..."
"Give me a second. Got it!" she exclaimed triumphantly and several things happened at the same time. Alarm siren started blaring, there was a loud metal click at the door leading into the lab and heavy blast shutters started descending from the ceiling, slowly covering the windows.
"What have you done?"
Princess was smiling like a cat that has just caught a bird. "The whole wing is now under lockdown. Safety measures in case of contamination."
"Well, that's splendid, but how are we supposed to get out now?"
"This area is not part of the quarantined wing." She jerked her chin towards the exit. "We can leave through that door. They won't be able to follow us. At least not in the next 48 hours."
She walked up to me and offered her shoulder to support me again.
"No need," I said. "I think I can walk on my own for a while." I looked back into the lab. "What keeps them from cancelling the lockdown? Can't they just turn it off?"
She shook her head. "No, they can't. It's a protocol."
"Yeah, but since there's no contamination at all..."
"It's a protocol, Tony. There are no exceptions. 48 hours."
"Right." If they want to stay locked in there because some papers tell them so, let them be my guests. Crazy scientists.
"Let's go. We still might run into problems. This was just one wing."
She started walking toward the door, but I stopped her and turned her to face me. "Princess. Kellie... Before we go, we need to make something clear. Don't you ever again try to shield me with your body. Never ever. Do you understand?"
She nodded sheepishly.
"If you can't promise me that, I'm going to sit down here and wait 48 hours or however long it takes them to come and get me. You scared the hell out of me in there. If anyone is to catch a bullet, it will be me, not you. Life of such an old dog like me is not worth the life of a pretty young lady like you. Am I making myself clear?"
"Actually, I strongly believe that everyone's life has equal value regardless of age or what a person did."
"That's not the answer you were supposed to give me, Princess. I'm waiting."
She took a deep breath. "And regarding your age, thanks to the alien gene your physical age does not match the real number you told me when I was filling in your card. Taking into consideration your overall good shape I'm assessing your current physical age at forty something years. Which only confirms the theory..."
"You are being difficult, Princess. Compliments won't get you off the hook. Not now, anyway." Overall good shape. And she tells it right into my face just like that. Watcher almighty!
But she kept going, "...that the exposure causing the genetic change occurred when you were approximately at that age in reality." She paused and blinked as if she just now realized I was giving her a stern look. Her eyes darted to my chest and back to my face. Is my bare chest making you uncomfortable, Princess? I thought you were long past that, especially with that scientific attidude you've been giving me. But then again you have noticed my 'overall good shape'.
"Yes, you've made yourself clear. I promise not to play human shield again," she said at last and squirmed.
I couldn't help not to grin inwardly. I released my hold on her.
We exited the room and were sneaking through the corridors heading to the nearest stair to the upper level as Princess informed me. We finally got there only to be met with an obstacle in the form of another scientist. I remembered having seen this one already. On the day they brought me here.
"One man won't stop us now," I whispered to Princess. "Your syringe or my scalpel? I could also blood choke him, if you prefer."
She looked at me somewhat flummoxed. Was I being too eager?
Then she started off toward him. "Grayson," she greeted him warmly.
"Oh," I mumbled to myself. "Should've told me right away he's on our side."
The man touched her arm friendly, then he checked me out in a way I would check a woman. I cleared my throat warningly. I didn't appreciate it in jail and I certainly wasn't going to start now.
"So you did it after all," he said to Princess. "I gather all went well so far? I always thought we could use some good old alarm drill training."
"Oh Grayson, I'm so glad we didn't lock you in there with others."
He chuckled. "I had a feeling you might try to break him out soon when I heard about the scheduled surgery. When Branson from immunology practically begged me to give up my spot on the list in his favor so that he could spend more time working on your friend's samples this week, I humoured him. With reservations, of course. Something about him being on the verge of an importnant breakthrough, so he said. You're lucky to be Morgan's assisstant. Many would kill for the position these days."
"They'll be happy to hear the spot is open now. We have to go. Thank you for everything, Grayson."
"Wait. I suggest you take a different route. The security is on their feet looking for you, this place is too close to their center. You should try to go through the recreational wing. It will take you longer, but there are less cameras too."
They have a recreational wing here? On the other hand who else than I should know best that torturing people is a lucrative business?
"Good idea. Thank you again, Grayson."
"Good luck, Kellie."
Then he turned to me. "I have no idea what she sees in you to go through all the trouble for you and take such risk. I personally think you are not worth it. You are no different from all those people who keep using her, including her own crafty brother. She won't be happy until you're free though, and as a good friend I'm going to pretend I haven't seen either of you tonight. However, if anything bad happens to her because of you, I'll cultivate a special strain of virus especially for you that even your super regenerating alien ability won't be able to beat."
I smirked. "Good to know. I'll give you a call for sure, if I get tired of being in a good shape." You wouldn't be so bold to speak to me like that if you knew there's a scalpel in my pocket, little boy. "I know who you are, doctor. You are one of those people who put on gloves, believing their hands stay clean, even though they commit atrocities. You may think you are better than me, but you're mistaken. And if you're such a good friend of Kellie's, maybe you should have gotten involved more to help her than just giving directions and playing 'I see no evil'," I hissed and brushed past him roughly.
Not long after we left the smart-ass doctor behind us, Kellie's phone started buzzing. She checked the display and looked at me. "It's Chris," she said.
For a brief moment I dared to hope that my son was maybe involved in this whole plan. That he's waiting for us in a car outside. Kellie's face told me I was foolish to harbour such hope. No, my son didn't know and the idea of him finding out was clearly making Princess very uncomfortable.
"Should I take it?" she asked me.
"If you think it's a good idea..."
"He almost never calls me to work unless it's important." She looked alarmed. "Oh, Watcher, what if it's about Celeste. The things I told her tonight must have spooked her really bad. Something could have happened. I need to take the call."

Chris
Sleep was avoiding me. I had this nagging feeling, a thought in the back of my mind. Why would Kellie tell Celeste something that scared her? It didn't sound like Kellie at all. I should have listened to Midget and find out more. Too late to ask her now, she was probably sleeping already. But it couldn't hurt to give Kellie a call and check up on her, just to be sure everything was alright

It took a while before she answered. "Hey, sis. Are you at work?"
"Of course I am at work. Where else I should be?"
"Breaking my father out of jail?" I joked. Of course she wouldn't laugh.
"Why are you calling, Chris? Is everything alright? Is Celeste alright?"
"What did you tell her, Kellie? She wouldn't stop about you being in danger and wouldn't go to bed. Thank you very much. And supposedly I'm to drive her to school in the morning? Why did I have to hear it from her?"
"Chris... She's your sister too. I shouldn't be asking you every time to drive her. You should do it more often of your own will and bond with her. She needs her brother too, especially at this critical age."
This is what happens when you show concern, Chris. You get a lecture. What is it with the girls tonight?
"Now if you excuse me, Chris, I have to..."
"Why do you sound so breathless, Kellie? Are you running? What is that awful sound in the back? Are those sirens?"
"I gotta go, Chris. We have a situation here. Love you. Hug Celeste for me when she wakes up. Or give it a try at least."
And just like that she hang up on me. What the hell is wrong with the girls tonight?

Tony
Listening to the conversation Princess had with my son over phone made me chuckle. "I take it Chris is still such a good brother to his sisters as he's a good son to me," I said while we resumed our sneaking through the corridors.
She snorted. "You have no idea. I mean I love him, but sometimes I'm so near exploding and starting to throw our cookware at him. I don't even know how he always charms me into forgiving him."
"Must be the genes," I winked at her. "I remember I was driving your mom crazy constantly, but all it took was a well-timed flirty look and she surrendered." The memory brought a smile to my lips.
We moved on in silence. Two or three times we had to hide from passing personnel. It was safer and easier than having to eliminate them and find a place to hide them in. The recreational wing was indeed under less surveillance. It consisted of several gyms, saunas, swimming pools even a bar. We heard music, clanking of gym equipment and voices of staff members indulging in a well deserved relaxation after a hard day's work which included as I imagined torturing and dissecting their helpless subjects.

After we climbed the stair to the upper level, I gladly accepted Kellie's help as I was feeling a bit dizzy again. I realized I hadn't eaten anything in what must have been days. The intravenous nutrition didn't count for food. I was famished.
We stumbled out of the exit. Night's fresh air kissed my face. I had to stop to savor the moment. After weeks and weeks of breathing the stale lab air I almost forgot how fresh air tasted. It smelled sweet too. It smelled of freedom. Princess looked at me with curiosity when I gave a happy laugh. If she thought I was acting crazily, I didn't mind.
Feeling free at last I allowed myself to open the door I had kept firmly shut ever since they locked me up. I allowed myself to think about comfortable bed, bathroom I could have all for myself, clothes that didn't scratch and smell like jail, and above all a decent food. Right now I would kill for falsomagro with mashed potatoes Giovanni's cook used to make. Stop fantasizing about food, or Princess gets the wrong impression, when you start drooling all over your chest!

"So where's our ride?" I asked cheerfully.
“I'm going to have to call a taxi for you,” she said. "My car's broken."
“We can't go by taxi, Princess, unless you want to kill the driver. We want to make it harder for the police to track us from here. The less witnesses spot us the better.”
"What other options do we have?" she asked looking helpless.
I gestured toward the nearby parking lot. "We need to help ourselves to a car, of course,” I said.
“Steal a car?” she gasped. “That’s… I wouldn’t even know how to do that…”
She was so green. I wondered if she had ever shoplifted anything, a lollipop at least. “Have you ever‒ Nevermind. If you take me to one of the cars, I'll break into it. You don't happen to have a piece of wire about a thirty inches long on you, do you?"
"Sorry."
"Then your ID card and hair clip will have to do."
“Are you sure you're feeling up to it, Tony? I don't think you should do anything strenuous yet. Your body is still recovering from the virus. Just a few minutes ago you felt dizzy. Your skin is cold, you must be freezing. We should have grabbed a coat for you.”
A short laugh escaped my lips. “Trust me, Princess, If I knew what you were planning, I would have made myself more presentable for our outing. Now let's get ourselves a car.”
She reluctantly led me to a shiny red Ferrari 812 and looked at me hesitantly. Oh, Princess, are you trying to break my heart tonight? At the sight of the car I felt something I hadn't felt in a very long time. Nostalgia for my homeland. I couldn't resist, I had to touch the beauty. I ran my fingers gently over her bright paint. Goodness, they knew how to make cars back home. This sexy lady had an adventurous heart, I could tell. We would make a good couple, but I had to say goodbye to her."Guardaci, siamo entrambi così lontani dalla patria. Spero che tu abbia una sorella che mi aspetti da qualche parte." I whispered to her before I turned back to Princess.
She watched me with curiosity, but I could tell she was getting anxious. We should hurry. I smiled at her bitterly. “As much as I approve of your taste in cars, Princess, we can’t take this beauty. I jerked my head towards a silver VW. This one is less conspicuous.”
She hesitated. “It’s Grayson’s car. I don't think we should.”
“Oh, we absolutely should,” I said and started working on getting us in. Perfect.
When I was done, I opened the passenger door for Kellie to get in. She didn't. "I'm not coming with you, Tony," she said. "I must go back."
I paused, confused, and got out of the car. "Why would go back?"
"I must face the consequences. I can't just run away."
"That's nonsence, Princess. We need to disappear and wait until the dust settles. Then we'll figure out what to do next. Trust me, I'm more familiar with situations like this."
"I'm really sorry, you have to leave without me. Good luck."
I could tell that she had already made up her mind. No amount of verbal persuading on my part would convince her that going back was a bad idea. But I learned one or two things about Princess over the course of weeks, so I knew there was a way to make her do what I wanted, what was a sensible thing to do in our situation. I had to use a different approach with her.
"Alright," I said. "I guess this is a goodbye. Do what you have to, Princess. Thanks for everything." I got in the car in more clumsily fashion than I had to, pretending to have hit my shin. I cursed under my breath, but loud enough for her to hear. Then I collapsed in the driver's seat with a groan. I cast a furtive glance at her and slumped over the wheel panting heavily. Finally the concerned voice came, "Is everything alright? You will be able to drive, will you not?"
"Yeah. I'm fine. The stuff you injected me with before must be wearing off. I'll be fine, I think... hope. Goodbye, Princess."
Don't leave me, for heaven's sake! I'm an old man on the verge of dying! Have mercy with poor old dad who had been tortured for weeks in the blasted lab! I hoped my hands were shaking convincingly enough as I slowly reached for the ignition wires. Princess was still standing there watching me worriedly, which was a good sign.
"I know what you're doing, Tony," she said, but her statement lacked confidence. She thought she knew I was playing her but wasn't a hundred percent sure.
"I'm trying to start the damned car, that's what I'm doing. Why are you still here, Princess?" I pretended to be struggling with the wires, while ocassionally peeking in her direction. Her posture spoke of inner conflict. Good. Good.
She came to a decision at last and stepped closed to the car. "Fine. I'm driving you," she said almost defiantly. "But once I drop you off, I'm going back. Now move aside. Let me do it."
I looked up into her eyes and my hands connected the wires unerringly like so many times in the past. The engine started up immediately. "Princess, the carriage awaiteth," I said and gave her the brightest smile I could muster. Then I obediently climbed over to the passenger seat.
She gave me a reproachful look and sat behind the wheel. Splendid.
I told her the directions and within an hour we arrived to my safehouse. Curiosity was stronger than her resolve to return and she got off the car to look around. Or maybe she just wanted to see that I got home safely. Either way I didn't have to come up with another improvised plan to keep her here. Yet.
She followed me warily. "Whose house is it, Tony?"
"Mine. Well, the ownership is written on my friend's Vincent name, but the actual owner is me."
"It looks very... uhm... unwelcoming."
Her effort to stay polite in every situation made me chuckle. "You mean it's a hovel. A ruin."
"Well... yes."
"It's meant to look this way. It's not that bad inside, I promise. I never expected to actually live here, so I didn't fully furnish it and make the interior match my taste. That's going to change now."
"Oh. Your house in Oasis Springs was... different."
"That's one way of putting it," I said and couldn't help grinning. Compared to this, my house in Oasis Springs was a palace.
I walked to the door and pulled out a loose brick in the wall next to it. The key was still safely hidden there. I picked it and put it in the keyhole when all of a sudden a low whine and scratching came from the other side of the door. Oh Watcher, how could I have forgotten about her?
I unlocked the door and a black blur shot out of it. Princess gasped and jumped back. In the next moment I had my arms full of snorting, drooling, whining creature. "I know, I know, I'm the worst master in the world. If you were smart enough you'd find a better one."
Princess was approaching the two of us with astonished expression on her face. "You never told me you had a dog. How did it even survive here all alone?"
"I had Vincent move her here and arrange for someone to come feed her, walk her every day and also look after the house, while I was in jail. With all the things going on I completely forgot about her."
"How could you forget you bought a dog?"
I looked at her. "I didn't buy her. I had never planned to get a dog. She was a stray. Followed me home one day and wouldn't leave. I may have made the mistake to let her in and throw her a piece of steak I had for dinner. I wouldn't leave me either after that. I bet she's been waiting for seconds ever since, haven't you, Dog?"
"Seriously? You just call her Dog? You haven't even given her a proper name?"
"You can call her Zoe, if you like, Princess. She doesn't mind. I think it's the tone of voice she responds to. She came to me even if I called her cookie or gelato. She knows. Now, may I give you a house tour?"
"You were right, it doesn't look half as bad inside. It has a certain charm to it."
She was being too nice again. The walls and floors needed to be scraped off and repainted. The whole house called for cleaning and repairs. I wondered what the person Vincent paid was doing all the time. Playing videogames? It was a miracle the house still had working appliances and the dog didn't starve to death.
"The only really important thing in this house is the computer and net connection," I said. With the access to my foreign bank accounts I can do anything, even turn this place into a functional base."
"I'm happy to hear you have everything you need, Tony. I won't have to worry about you so much. I'm afraid I really have to go now."
No. I couldn't let her go yet. I had to convince her to stay until I knew what she would be dealing with after her return. What a disgraziato I would be if I let her go into battle unprepared. The least I could do was call Vincent first thing in the morning. There were also words that needed to be said.
I threw her off a bit when I took her hands into mine and lifted them to my lips.
"I'm sorry for standing in front of you looking so untidy and ungentlemanlike. You deserve much better. I would have cleaned myself up right away if I wasn't afraid you'd leave if I let you out of my sight."
I had to clear my throat before continuing. "Nobody has ever done for me anything like what you did tonight, Princess. Thanks to you I'm a free man again. We are not bound by blood, you owed me absolutely nothing, your brother blames me for your mom's death and yet you decided to help me. I'm an arrogant, selfish bastard who has no respect to anyone. But you, Princess... I'm humbled beyond words by your immense kindness. I'm forever in your debt. Whenever you need me, I'll fly across the world to be there for you. Ask anything of me and I will do it. You have my word."
She shifted her weight nervously. "You could stop calling me Princess," she said, her face flushed.
"Anything but that. You'll always be Princess to me and that's how it is supposed to be. It must never change." Because if it did, I'd be asking for a big trouble.
"Why?"
"Because. You have to do me one more favor. You have to accept my invitation for a very late dinner or a very early breakfast. The fridge may be poorly stocked and some of the stuff may be near or past expiration date, but I'm a miracle worker when it comes to cooking. I'm sure I'll be able to convince you that mold is a new best seasoning."
"Ugh. I really should go."
"What difference does one more hour make. Stay, please."
As it turned out one hour made a big difference.
As we were eating our sandwitches, I turned on the tv. Then's when the news hit us. It was much worse than any of us could have imagined.
Princess was beside herself with terror. Eyes wide she kept staring at the tv, repeating, "We didn't do it. We didn't do it. This wasn't supposed to happen." As if saying it over and over could undo it. Eventually she jumped on her feet. "We have to tell them the truth, Tony! I have to go back and tell them the truth!"
"To whom exactly?"
"Everyone! Anyone who will listen. We didn't kill those people. There was no fire, when we were leaving!"
"I hate to tell you, Princess, but we are not exactly credible persone. An escaped convict and the lady who helped him escape? Whom do you think everyone is going to trust? Us or the perfectly groomed government agent?"
I could tell the harsh reality was slowly dawning at her, even though her sense of truth and justice was still refusing to accept it. Watching all those emotions as they were spilling over her face like waves was breaking my heart. The waves tried to overtake her, but she fought them valiantly, swallowing hard and blinking rapidly until she drowned in the tide and collapsed in my arms. Her body shook violently with every sob. That's when I learned the whole truth.
From the start I believed that helping me escape was a spur of the moment decision on her part. She had never mentioned anything that would suggest she was secretly harbouring the idea to break me out of the lab. I believed she hadn't thought past the moment when we exit the facility. I was wrong.
Words spurted out of her between the sobs. I learned that she had taken into consideration all consequences. From the possibility that she might never ever find a job in the field of science again to being thrown in a dark hole or being shot to death. Regardless of these prospects she never doubted the rightness of her decision. What she hadn't anticipated was government coverup. She was ready to pay for what she really did, not for the casualties she wasn't responsible for. She was ready to sacrifice everything, including her own life, to protect me. To give me back my freedom.
I should be protecting her and I failed. My throat tightened as I realized something. I felt a sudden surge of panic attempting to overcome me. It was happening again. I was ruining the life of yet another innocent woman.
Wondering what Tony said to the Ferrari? :-)
Guardaci, siamo entrambi così lontani dalla patria. Look at us, both so far away from our homeland.
Spero che tu abbia una sorella che mi aspetti da qualche parte. I hope you have a sister waiting for me somewhere.
