Chapter 2.11
Beryl had enough time to cool down on the way home. There was still enough to process, but at least she could do that with clearer head. She got off the taxi and headed home.
She didn't expect to receive a special welcome, though. Detective Banks and officer Alvarez were waiting for her at the doors.
Detective Banks: "Miss Heffner. We have some questions for you and we need you to come with us."
Beryl: "Why? I can answer you questions right here, detective."
Detective Banks: "I'm afraid it's not an option."
Beryl: "Am I under arrest?"
Detective Banks: "That depends on your answers, miss Heffner."
Babs Heffner: "What is going on here?"
Beryl: "Okay, detective, I'll go with you, just let me talk to my mother first."
Beryl: "Mom, they want me to go to the station with them. Do you know why?"
Babs: "Where have you been Beryl? They think you are involved in the kidnapping. Tell me it's not true."
Beryl: "What? How can they possibly think..."
Babs: "You've been acting strangely, Beryl. You were gone all night, you wear this weird clothes. You can't blame them they're suspicious.
Beryl: "More likely they are desperate they can't find Brian."
Beryl's last comment brought her mother on the verge of tears again.
Beryl: "Mom, I had nothing to do with the kidnapping, I swear."
Beryl: "Actually, I have good news. I got a help! Brian is safe now. I promise. I'll bring him home soon. You have to trust me. Don't tell the Police yet. Brian is safe, mom. You'll hold him again."
Babs: "Are you telling the truth?"
Beryl: "I would never lie to you mom. Not in this. I love you."
Detective Banks: "We have to go, miss Heffner."
Beryl felt like a criminal. It made her think of Tony. How could he live like that, constantly looking over his shoulder?
The worst thing was adding to her mom's worries. Hopefully this will all be over soon.
Meanwhile in Oasis Springs...
Tony was playing a daddy and looking forward to Beryl's return and more teasing, when his phone rang.
Voice: "Mr.Corleonesi, my friend at the Newcrest Police Department has just informed me, that Beryl Heffner was brought to the station ten minutes ago. I thought you might find this piece of information useful. I hope this doesn't change your plans though and our deal still stands."
Well, it definitely changes my plans for this evening, Tony thought.
He needed to call a friend.
Tony: "Hey. Yes, it's Tony. I need a favor. How fast can you get to Newcrest? That's not enough. You need to be faster. Yes, you better take faster car. Why you? Because your face isn't in every police database and I'm not the one with degree in law."
