My black backpack's stuffed with broken dreams
20 bucks should get me through the week
Never said a word of discontentment
Fought it a thousand times but now
I'm leaving home

Marissa was lying on her bed in a very romantic mood thinking of none other than Brian Heffner. She would have never thought it possible she could really like one of the Heffner boys. Well, given her current state of mind "like" was an understatement. "Head over heels" would describe her feelings more accurate.
It's been two months since they met in the park. Then they met again the day after. Brian invited her to a game of horseshoes which she thought was lame at first, but Brian somehow made it fun. She have come to realize in time that's what Brian always does. He turns even the most boring things into fun.
They kept playing and teasing each other. Marissa caught herself laughing more than she had in ages.
Then on a whim she decided to kiss him. Even though he was trying to convince her he wanted to help her by offering his friendship, deep down she believed all he wanted was to get a piece of the gorgeous rich girl. And she was willing to give it to him, since he at least treated her nicely. She was ready to do anything to forget about Tony. Even if it meant to break a heart of the Heffner boy.
She couldn't be more wrong. Brian didn't leap at the chance of easy smooching and more. And there she was again, feeling rejected and unwanted and unloved. Tony situation all over again.
"Marissa," Brian said. "What you just did could be very nice, if I didn't know it was for the wrong reasons."
How could he have known?
"One doesn't get over a broken heart so easily," he went on. "My sister is a proof of that. When you stop hurting because of Tony and you still feel like kissing me, you can try again. I'm not going anywhere."

How foolish she was back then, thinking she could use him as means to get over Tony! And there were still many nights she cried herself to sleep because of her first love. But the more time she spent with Brian the easier the pain got. He was genuinely kind and selfless. Marissa often wondered if he was helping other people apart from her.
After some time she realized she wanted to be the only woman in his life. He didn't deserve to be just toyed with. Brian Heffner was a serious husband material. And she fell in love with him hopelessly.
Next time she kissed him, he didn't pull away.
Everything was just perfect.
When the time came, she felt more ready and less afraid than he did. None of them regretted anything though.
A week after they had spend a night together, Brian invited her to his nephew's birthday party. But before that Marissa decided she didn't want to wait any longer and did what her heart told her to. She proposed to him. After the initial shock that it was her not him who did the proposing, he accepted.
She felt so happy and excited to become Mrs. Heffner!
There was only one thing left to do. Tell her father. And as she had expected it didn't go well.
Fully engrossed in his work he barely noticed she was in the same room.
"Dad? Do you have a moment? I need to tell you something."
"Uh-huh." He reluctantly looked up from his computer screen. "What is it, sweetheart?"
"I'm engaged," she told him in a deadpan way.
"What? Engaged? To whom? I sincerely hope not to Tony Corleonesi, because I explicitly told you he's not good for you anymore, especially after he had humiliated you in front of everyone. I've spent a great amount of time and money to..."
"I'm so over Tony!" Marissa cut in.
"Good. Then who is the guy? I didn't notice you were seeing anyone else."
Of course you didn't. "I'm engaged to Brian Heffner," she said proudly.
Michael jumped out of his chair. "Heffner? The guy from the legacy family? The nobody? I won't let you marry just some random guy whose grandfather was literally found on the street. He's so below our standards!"
"I don't care about any standards anymore!" Marissa shouted. "They were your standards anyway, not mine. Brian makes me happy and I love him. I want to spend my life with him like it or not!"
"First Tony, now this Heffner guy. You have a terrible taste in men, Marissa! I should have taken care of it and arrange an appropriate marriage for you long time ago!"
"Don't you care one bit about my hapinness, dad?"
"Of course I do! That's why I can't let you marry him! There are things in motion that cannot be stopped at this point. You don't want to get caught in the crossfire, Marissa. I ask you, no, I order you to cancel the engagement!"
"I will do no such thing! What are you talking about? What things did you put in motion? If you cause Brian any harm, I will never speak to you again! I'm marrying him with or without your approval!"
"I didn't put anything in motion. Tony did! And you won't get my approval for this foolishness! I seriously hope you'll reconsider or I'm going to disinherit you. No Heffner gets his hands on our property!"
"If you see it this way dad... then as the future Heffner I hereby waive my claim to Castelli property." And with that she went out of the door, ignoring the rest of her father's shouts.
Sure, she's going to miss this house and her father. But she'll be happy wherever she and Brian end up living.
